Another example of the extreme environmentalists taking over something that is good and then go about destroying all to save some animal that doesn’t need saving. It’s been coexisting there for decades with the farmers. This is exactly what is wrong with the state of California allowing environmental regulations and environmentalists to destroy our state. We will now have another fire hazard because they will not allow any type of maintenance. And the farmers who have farmed there forever have lost there properties and livelihoods. So sad destruction of a great state!
The fact that the farmers/ranchers were “under a gag order” tells me everything I need to know. This was jammed down their throats. Meanwhile, environmental groups could get their side of the story out in fundraisers. Sheesh.
It is astonishing. The farmers sought to partner with environmentalists to care for the land, limit development, and invested in maintaining it under a lease agreement. Suddenly the last lease agreement is upended?! What prompted that? Farming practices that damaged the land? Why did the environmentalists sue? Were farmers damaging wetlands?
If the farmers were operating as agreed and had a 20 year lease/renewal…WHAT WAS THE ISSUE?!
Developers embedded with big tech behind the enviro/animal rights agenda.... land will be developed eventually - meanwhile - land will be used to sell mitigation credits @ $4,000 to $795,000 per species/per acre to other developers looking to offset damage other projects. Plus, developers can opt to buy more private land many times the size & give it to enviros in lieu of paying credits... enviros broker the deal thru third party conservation banking brokers. The Carrizo Plains was a ranch turned into a nature preserve -- then solar companies come along & put 5,000 acres of solar on the land and had to acquire 30,000 more acres of ranchland & give it to enviros to offset the enviro damage done by the enviro-friendly solar farm.
This is absolutely outrageous! California is doomed. God bless those generations of dairy and beef cattle farmers. I feel so badly for them. That country is so beautiful, partly because it has been managed properly, by its farming custodians.
In Genesis 1:28 man is to have dominion over the Earth. On the other hand, the climate control freaks, believe man should have no dominion; that is why brush is not cleared, fields are not irrigated, water is scarce, and trees are not trimmed. Fuel, accommodating fire, has accumulated.
The religion of “climate change” has taken over. If man had the proper dominion, the fires in LA would not be this bad. Politicians have betrayed us and are continuing to do so.
Our food supply is becoming more and more in jeopardy every day, but the environmentalists worship at the alter of Baal. If this continues, we will destroy ourselves in favor of “Mother Earth”.
Another excellent article. I will echo what another commenter stated about the years of co-existing in the area. I lived in Petaluma for 10 years and worked in several of the coastal communities, including PRS, for years. I guess we saw this coming when they closed down the oyster farm years ago. What I don't understand, is while this area does get some tourism to the coastal area and parks (Muir Woods/Stinson gets WAY more) it is very minimal. Not a lot of people know or visit this area (the lighthouse is famous). It is actually very quiet and most "tourism" is just quiet drives on the coast from A to B and reaching the area by car is quite a ways from the main 101 freeway. Other than PRS there really isn't any place to eat or get gas for miles. Never heard of any environmental concerns before. What about the Coast Guard Station at PRS? No issue with what goes on there? I have a feeling Huffman won't get a warm reception at the "party". Also have to wonder how much Newsom has weighed in on this since he has lived in and has now moved back to Marin County.
The fact that it is a National Park put a bulls-eye on them for these radicals who love nothing more than using a lawsuit to bring the heavy jackboot of govt on some independent farmers and ranchers quietly going about their lives
The Western Watershed Project was a plaintiff because they are opposed to cattle grazing on public lands. So now that the ranchers will be made to leave, the new managers of the land recognize the need for grazing so they are going to bring in cattle owned by other people to graze.
So I would assume this means the Westen Watershed project would sue again to prohibit private grazing on public lands.
If they don’t sue, does this mean their reason for the lawsuit was a facade and the concerns of grazing and environmental degradation brought by the plaintiffs were all just a means to bring an end to the existence of the historic farms on the Point?
The deer and elk are not privately owned. Western Watersheds Project sued to prevent cattle under private ownership from grazing on public lands. Now due to their lawsuit the farms will have to go, yet the management of the park will bring in OTHER PRIVATELY OWNED CATTLE to graze.
Won’t the Western Wastersheds Project be compelled to sue them too?
"Provided adequate funding is available..." Tossing out farmers/ranchers who are contributing to society on the hopes that the government will force the rest of us to fork up extra taxes to pay for land that most of us never use. Oh right, not to mention the cost of beef/dairy products will increase.
What were the allegations against the farmers and ranchers? Some dairy farms if scaled up poorly can create wastewater and associated problems with runoff and ground water.
That’s true but California has very strict mandates regarding groundwater and dairies. There’s a whole adjacent industry of laboratories that analyze dairy run off and engineers and heavy equipment companies that design and implement water run off systems for dairies.
Less cows now than 70 years ago - Point Reyes & nationwide.... SF bay area has 37 leaky sewage plants that leak billions of gallons of raw sewage into the bay & delta every year & require a year's worth of water for 50 million people every year to dilute the pollution. Plus the pollution & excess water use from power washing all the needles & feces that cover the streets of San Francisco.
Large herds of bison, elk, deer, antelope etc... roamed the US before Europeans came -- all those animals - plus fish, birds - relieved themselves in or near the water - livestock now not near the herd density there was pre-1700s.
Oh dear. I am not sure the pollution problems elsewhere are relevant to Point Reyes, unless you argue that since we made a mess of one place we should make a mess of everywhere. I was just looking for information about the impact that farming and ranching are having on Point Reyes.
There is no mess made by cows in Point Reyes - look at the photos ground level & satellite. Enviros shill for developers by demonizing agriculture so they can regulate it out of business & free up land for development - 2 million acres of US farmland paved over per year - lost 155 million acres since 1981… cattle population down to 1950 level… so whatever increase of land/air/water pollution is not coming from sources that are decreasing.

nationwide - worldwide... 30% of land in non use by 2030... 50% by 2050.... plus reduce 50% of livestock by 2040.

You are missing the point, no pun intended.

I’m sure the “environmentalists” will soon want charging stations for their EVs at Pt. Reyes Lighthouse.

Environmentalism is toxic.
This is so sad I am so sorry.

Thanks for the info.
Is this connected to the 30x30 commitment?
Nunes, is that Devin Nunes’ family?
He’s from Fresno. Nunes is a common surname from the Azores.
Seems good to me that the public will be able to access public land.
There is plenty of space on LA… authentic campfire smell!
