The government has a responsibility in these cases to work with cooperative individuals especially with respect to legacy rights and boundaries that are bound to be uncertain. It recalls for me another story published by Roy Reed in the 1980's a former correspondent for the NY Times. Titled 'Vernon McCall and the Government' (Looking for Hogeye 1986) it outlines similar abuses by the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. Clearly this has been going on for some time.
Hopefully the courts or their congressman will sort out this abuse. Congress should make mediation the law in these cases. That being said I would like to hear what the Forest Service thinks happened.

I have a friend here that move to Idaho 30 or 40 years ago who claimed the Sierra club came up to Idaho to introduce grizzlies and when that was done went back to California. This sounded like BS as I don't think grizzlies need a passport to move from Canada. A quick google informed me grizzlies have been protected in Idaho since 1947 so nobody needed to introduce them. The ownership of this land has been clear. The American Constitution in Article 4 Section 3 Clause 2 vests in the government the power to retain buy, sell, and regulate federal lands. The courts including the Supreme Court have consistently upheld this power.

These are places available to all Americans to hunt, fish, hike, camp, and backpack on. Europe is the vision these people wish to replicate here. What I remember during 2015-2017.

So Bundy's and LaVoy Finicum and some militia went there to protest. Obamas FBI, Bureau of Land Management (weapnonized), Ore. State Police and the "UN" locked down that area. LaVoy Finicum was set up by Sheriff Wade. Finicum , Aamon Bundy, another militia man and 2 women agreed to go to a Town Hall meeting to meet and discuss the situation "unarmed". The Town Hall meeting was 60 miles away. On a horseshoe curve 2 roadblocked were set up. When LaVous truck approached, he put his arms out telling the Rmed men he had permission to travel there. They began firing at him and the occupants of the truck. LaVoy took off, as he rounded the curve the second roadblock began firing at him. The truck hit a ditch. LaVoy jumped out, arms up in the air, they shot him in the arm, and as his arm dropped shot him another 6 times, as he lay dying a armed agent walked up to him and shot him in the head, and chest. Then they turned on the unarmed men/ women in the truck. The men threw their bodies over the women to protect em. It was said about 300 rounds but the truck. The Sheriff's wife worked there as well. Remember, the Sheriff set up LaVoy Finicum, by arranging the Town Home meeting. LaVoy had been a successful Spokesman for the Farmers and Ranchers in the Southwest. He was a AZ rancher. When all this became top news, the FBI and BLM Office burned all the files. Look up The Hammond Family or "Muir Reserve Standoff". Unless this was removed. I’m going to get some hate here, but here goes… These people have been using ‘Public Land’ for 60 years. That would be land that belongs to all of us. They have fenced it off. They have posted ’No Hunting’ signs to keep the public off public land. They are treating the public land as if it is theirs. I have little sympathy for them.
Sometimes, there are agreements between the rancher or farmer, that offers something the government wants. Like paying farmers to not work their land, for instance. The writer, or one of them, did say there was an agreement. It's hard to know w/o looking at the evidence. With that said, there are better ways to get things done and that penalty seems out of place.
Public land should be just that-public land.
